4 charged in ATM robbery spree using ‘Jaws of Life’ across Maryland, DC

Four D.C. residents are facing several counts after allegedly employing “Jaws of Life” to rob convenience shop ATMs in Maryland and the District, prosecutors stated on Tuesday.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia, Jeff Crews, 35; David Walker, 40; Maurice Roots, 35; and Kevin Bing, 31, are accused of conspiring to use the gadget to break into automated teller machines and steal the cash contained inside.

According to the USAO, the four males are accused of stealing cars and donning masks during the robberies, which occurred primarily in the early morning hours. They would load tools into the robbery car and drive to a convenience store, where they would each perform a task—one man would occasionally stay in the car as a getaway driver, at least one would subdue store employees, and another would attempt to destroy surveillance video and network equipment, all while the last person used the “Jaws of Life” or another tool to rip open the ATM and remove the cash.

The USAO stated that the guys are suspected of the following offenses:

Jan. 3, 2025; an ATM on the 9900 block of Greenbelt Rd. in Lanham, Md.
Jan. 4, 2025; multiple stores on the 6000 block of Sandy Spring Rd. in Laurel, Md., and the 900 block of Chillum Rd. in Hyattsville, Md.
Jan. 7, 2025; a store on the 7700 block of Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, NMd.
Jan. 9, 2025; attempted ATM robbery along Route 3 in Gambrills, Md.
Jan. 22, 2025; an ATM in a store on the 7400 block of Annapolis Rd., Hyattsville, Md.
Jan. 29, 2025; a store on the 1100 block of Cherry Hill Rd. in Beltsville, Md., and an ATM inside a store on the unit block of Watkins Park Drive in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Feb. 1, 2025; an ATM in a store in the 7900 block of Good Luck Rd. in Lanham, Md.
Feb. 6, 2025; an ATM on the 6100 block of Oxin Hill Rd. in Oxon Hill, Md.
Feb. 19, 2025; an ATM in a store on the 11000 block of Baltimore Ave. in Beltsville, Md.
Feb. 22, 2025; an ATM in a store on the 9400 block of Lanham Severn Rd. in Lanham, Md.
Feb. 28, 2025; an ATM on the block of Crain Highway N in Gambrills, Md., and an ATM in the 600 block of University Blvd. in Silver Spring, Md.
March 11, 2025; a store on the 6500 block of Coventry Way in Clinton, Md., and an ATM on the 8900 block of Rhode Island Ave. in College Park, Md.
March 19, 2025; attempted robbery at a store’s ATM on the 9500 block of Ruby Lockhard Blvd. in Bowie, Md., before a robbery at an ATM on the 5200 block of 3rd St. NE in Washington, D.C.
