Ceremony to Honor 799 Killed in the Line of Duty
LONDON, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, members of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and law enforcement officers from across the state will honor the 799 Ohio peace officers who have died in the line of duty since 1823.
The annual Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Thurs., May 2, 2019 at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy located in London, Ohio. This year’s ceremony will be held inside the Academy’s gymnasium due to the expected weather conditions. This public ceremony memorializes fallen officers from across the state, as well as surviving family members.
Officers being honored this year include four who died in 2018:
- Officer Eric J. Joering, Westerville Division of Police
- Officer Anthony P. Morelli, Westerville Division of Police
- Officer Mathew J. Mazany, Mentor Police Department
- Officer Vu X. Nguyen, Cleveland Division of Police
A moment of silence will be held for Officer Dale Woods, Colerain Township Police Department, who gave his life in the line of duty on Jan. 7, 2019. In keeping with Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony tradition, Officer Woods will receive full honors during the 2020 ceremony.
