Flags to be Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Flags have been ordered to be at half-staff following the death of Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

Justice Stevens, 99, was an associate of the United States Supreme Court serving from 1975 until his voluntary retirement in 2010. He was born on April 20, 1920 in Chicago, Ill. Justice Stevens was appointed to the country’s highest court by President Gerald Ford. He was the third longest serving Supreme Court Justice by days.

The proclamation by President Donald Trump reads, “As a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of John Paul Stevens, retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half‑staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day.  I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

In accordance with the order issued by the President of the United States of America and to honor the life and legacy of former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, John Paul Stevens, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Ohio from sunrise to sunset on his day of interment, July 23, 2019.
