Mother charged after gun discovered at Midlands high school

A Richland County mother is facing charges after authorities said she carried a gun to a high school campus.

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, 52-year-old Aprill Yakubu was charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds following an incident Tuesday morning.

According to RCSD, Yakubu was accompanying her child to school orientation at Westwood High School when she triggered a metal detector while carrying a revolver in her purse. The event was first reported to the sheriff’s department by a school’s private security guard.

Yakubu later informed police that she forgot she had the handgun in her possession when attempting to enter the school.

According to records, she was detained at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and released on a $10,000 bail following her arrest.
