An Indiana woman was busted for DUI after being stopped at a Wawa with filled syringes and cut straws.
At 10:40 p.m., an officer on patrol at Wawa, 11770 N U.S. Hwy. 301, spotted a blue Nissan passenger car parked on the north side of the lot with the engine running. The Wildwood Police Department issued an arrest report on Friday. Casandra Gale-Stroud, 29, sat in the driver’s seat with a man passenger next to her.
A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed that the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license, therefore the officer approached the vehicle as it was leaving its parking space for a traffic stop. He then approached the vehicle and found Gale-Stroud was not properly seatbelted. According to the complaint, she was unable to hand over her driver’s identification and struggled to recall the middle initial of the phony identity she was presenting.
She also appeared very tired and agitated, with evident sweat and shivering. When questioned if there were any narcotics in the vehicle, her hand shakes became more severe. The report stated that both occupants insisted on leaving the window slightly open during the encounter.
More officers arrived on the scene, and Gale-Stroud was requested to get out of the vehicle. She reluctantly complied, attempting to maintain her balance as she was led to the front of a patrol vehicle. According to the complaint, she claimed to be well while struggling to keep her eyes open.
When asked about her age, she stopped for a long time before responding, “23 or 24.” She also stated that she did not keep track of such information. She later agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises, according to the report.
During the workout instruction, she appeared languid and occasionally used her arms for balance. She also took a draw on her vaporizer at one point. As she continued, one of the officers noted many track marks and open sores on her arms and hands, which were consistent with illicit drug usage, according to the report.
Her performance caused the cops to believe she was under the influence. A K-9 team investigated the vehicle and discovered narcotics inside, prompting a search, according to the report.
Law authorities discovered two loaded syringes in a cosmetic bag behind the driver’s seat. The syringes appeared to be either recently used or ready for use. The bag also included several needle caps, chopped straws with white powdered residue, and a butane torch. Two different wrapped pieces of burned foil containing suspected narcotics were also discovered behind the driver’s seat, according to the report.
The passenger claimed that none of the items belonged to him and that he had simply been picked up to get dinner from Wawa. Without being asked, he extended his arms to demonstrate that he had no track marks and was not using narcotics, according to the report.
Gale-Stroud was then detained and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center, where she gave breath and urine samples. She also admitted to owning the needles and other things discovered in the vehicle, stating that they would test positive for a heroin and methamphetamine cocktail, according to the report.
After she passed thru the jail system, officials informed the officer that her fingerprints did not match the name and date of birth she provided.
