A 35-year-old Polk County man faces many charges after being seen on surveillance footage vandalizing a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera and attempting to enter the residence, according to Sheriff Grady Judd.
Matthew McCormack, who lives on the same street as the victim, approached the house and took the camera from the front. McCormack visited the property for the second time, according to police.
Deputies and detectives examined footage captured by the device prior to its removal to identify McCormack. Additional neighborhood video shows him driving down the street and pulling directly into his own driveway shortly after.
When investigators met McCormack at his house, he initially denied any participation before confessing to police.
“When we found him, he had first denied it,” Judd stated during a morning briefing on the event. “And then he said, ‘Well yeah, I tried to get in the house.'”
Judd pointed out that the perpetrator was easily identifiable because the camera captured his face just before he tore it down.
“Just what are you thinking?” Judd inquired. “You live in the neighborhood, you go up, you tear up the people’s Ring doorbell camera, they’ve got video of you, you’ve done it before… try to be a good neighbor if you get out of jail.”
McCormack was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and charged with attempted burglary of an occupied house, trespassing in a structure or conveyance, and criminal mischief resulting in property damage under $200.
According to jail records, the bond for the trespassing and criminal mischief charges was set at $250 each, while the attempted burglary allegation was reported as merged.
