A man suspected of stealing dozens of trailers in Oregon and Washington earlier this year has pled guilty to seven counts, including aggravated theft and reckless endangerment.
Nikolas Edwards was arrested after being caught on camera stealing a trailer from a home business in Northeast Portland. Officers said he was simple to locate because he was already on probation and wore a GPS ankle monitor.
Investigators linked Edwards to multiple thefts in the neighborhood. Authorities stated he would steal trailers, sell them, and sometimes steal them back after the sale.
Following an extraordinary request from Edwards’ attorney, the judge agreed to delay sentencing.
“So he’s been in custody for about eight months at this point, and he’s accrued some property that he wants to get to his family, including pictures of his children,” his lawyer said. “He won’t be able to take them. If the court follows the agreement and considers 84 months, he will be unable to transport them to the facility where he is going, and those are valuable possessions to him. So he’s asking for some time to get that property delivered to his family.”
Edwards is due to be sentenced on Thursday. The district attorney is requesting a seven-year prison term.
