A convicted felon who lives in Oxford’s Densan Park community was nabbed when police discovered a loaded handgun in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
Phillip Spencer, 57, was arrested Saturday on two felony counts of possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, as well as misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia.
According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was conducting stationary traffic enforcement near County Road 101 and County Road 104 when he noticed a black Nissan Armada driving 53 mph in a 35 mph zone. Densan Park, just east of NE 49th Drive and 125th Loop, was where the deputy conducted the traffic stop.
Upon making contact with Spencer, the vehicle’s sole occupant, the deputy smelt the stench of new marijuana. Spencer told the deputy that he did not have a medical marijuana card, but that he smokes marijuana in his vehicle, even tho he claimed there was none inside.
When the deputy ordered Spencer to exit the Nissan so that a search could be conducted, he revealed there was a loaded weapon near the driver’s side floorboard.
Deputies found a SIG Sauer P250 loaded with 12 rounds of 9 mm ammo. Spencer has a felony conviction, according to a criminal background check.
During the arrest, deputies discovered a wallet in Spencer’s back pocket that had an unsmoked cigarillo wrapper stuffed with a green leafy substance. The substance field tested positive for marijuana.
Spencer was booked into Sumter County Detention Center and released after paying a $32,000 bond.
