A 53-year-old Georgia woman will spend the rest of her life in prison after a Lake County jury convicted her of murdering an elderly Florida couple in their home, according to court records.
Vickie Lynn Williams was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Cary F. Rada immediately following the jury’s recommendation. Days before, the same jury took only about half an hour to condemn Williams on two counts of first-degree murder in the December 2022 stabbing murders of Darryl and Sharon Getman.
“Darryl and Sharon Getman died as a result of unimaginable violence,” State Attorney Bill Gladson stated after the verdict. “Today, the jury made it clear that their lives mattered, accountability is important, and justice does not forget. This defendant has now been held accountable for her heinous crime.”
The killings occurred on New Year’s Eve 2022 within the Lakeside at Waterman Village retirement home in Mount Dora. Officers discovered Darryl Getman, 83, and his wife Sharon, 80, dead in their home.
Detectives from the Mount Dora Police Department, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement swiftly focused on Williams. Forensic analysts at the FDLE’s Orlando Regional Crime Laboratory identified her based on physical evidence found at the crime scene.
Investigators found that Williams fled the scene in the couple’s stolen green Kia Soul, carrying many paintings and valuables belonging to the victims. Law enforcement agents pursued Williams north to Savanna, Georgia, where she was apprehended on January 2, 2023. She has been in Lake County detention without bond ever since.
During the trial, prosecutors based their case on surveillance video, crime scene forensics, and the Getmans’ stolen items, which authorities discovered in Williams’ hands at the time of her arrest. Jurors accepted the state’s case completely, returning guilty verdicts on all charges.
Williams will spend her term with the Florida Department of Corrections.
