A 24-year-old New York man is being charged after Customs and Border Protection agents seized 65 pounds of the narcotic khat at Dulles Airport.
Bakari Wally was arrested at the airport on Thursday morning, according to a press release.
CBP flagged Wally while he was returning from Morocco.
Investigators stated they discovered the khat in his luggage, which had a street worth of $8,000.
According to CBP, khat is chewed to provide an amphetamine-like effect. Users can also boil dried khat leaves to make a stimulant tea.
CBP reported an uptick in khat smuggling into the area, with more than 1,100 pounds intercepted at Dulles in August and more than 1,200 recovered at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
