Police reported that a Minnesota man possessed twenty‑seven empty liquor bottles in his vehicle when he allegedly disregarded a stop sign and struck a couple, resulting in the death of the husband and serious injuries to his wife.
According to a Jordan Police Department press release, 38‑year‑old Drew Bergman faces charges of vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and additional offenses.
The collision occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Old Highway 169 and Aberdeen Avenue in Jordan, located roughly 35 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
Upon arrival, officers observed a Ford Bronco bearing extensive driver‑side damage alongside a severely damaged Mazda Miata. The Miata’s driver, a 69‑year‑old man, was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. His 65‑year‑old wife sustained multiple injuries, including a suspected collapsed lung and a broken sternum, according to the probable‑cause arrest affidavit.
Paramedics transported her to a hospital for treatment. The couple, residents of the local area, have not yet been identified.
Witnesses reported that Bergman traveled westbound on Highway 169 at excessive speed, disregarded a stop sign, and struck the Miata, which was proceeding south on Aberdeen Avenue through the intersection.
Bergman occupied the Bronco alone. Police detected the odor of alcohol on his breath, observed his unsteady gait, and noted bloodshot, glassy eyes, as documented in the affidavit.
When questioned about the incident, Bergman claimed it occurred “in the roundabout,” according to police; however, authorities confirmed that the collision took place at a four‑way stop.
Officers recovered twenty‑seven empty Fireball whiskey bottles and several 50‑milliliter containers of additional distilled spirits from the Bronco’s interior. Investigators submitted Bergman’s blood sample for laboratory analysis to ascertain his blood‑alcohol concentration.
Bergman previously faced impaired‑driving arrests in Wisconsin and North Dakota and entered a guilty plea in a 2025 Wisconsin case, according to police records.
Authorities transferred Bergman to the Scott County Jail, where he remains held on a $400,000 bond. Jail records have not yet disclosed his forthcoming court date.
His counsel, Jessica Symons of Keller Law, declined to provide comment when contacted by telephone.
