A New Orleans woman died after being struck by another vehicle on Interstate 10 while attempting to remove a trapped driver from a flipped vehicle, according to her mother and a witness to the collision.
Ka’Sheena Daniels, 31, died Sept. 25 on I-10 West near Elysian Fields Avenue after assisting in the release of a driver she knew as her neighbor, according to Franchon Williams, a friend who was with her at the time.
According to New Orleans police, the crash occurred when a fast-moving car made a rapid lane change and flipped over, prompting many drivers to stop and assist the trapped driver.
According to police, another vehicle struck one of the stopped cars, driving it into the gathering of people who had come to help. Authorities reported that several others were injured, but Daniels was the only one who died.
Daniels was born and raised in New Orleans, had recently celebrated her birthday, and was raising her adoptive son, Noah, while working in accounting, according to her mother, O’Sheenana Daniels.
“She just was that girl,” O’Sheenana Daniels stated in an interview on Friday. “If you needed help…and she could do it, it was done.”
How the crash unfolded
Daniels departed New Orleans East last Friday nite to socialize with close pals. The group noticed a flipped car on the freeway, and Williams claimed Daniels recognized the driver as her neighbor.
We see the lady. We try to assist her out. My friend KK jumped out,” Williams claimed, alluding to Ka-Sheena Daniels.
Williams stated that her companion helped the woman get out of the car, and that Daniels was struck shortly after, forcing her to tumble off the side of I-10.
“(We) are looking for my pal. “We were looking up under the cars and everyplace, and then they told me, like, ‘Well, y’all, somebody went over,'” Williams said. “They placed their flashlight down there. This is my pal. “She’s right down there.”
O’Sheenana Daniels stated that she assisted authorities in locating her daughter following the tragedy.
“I started screaming my (baby’s) name, and she said, ‘Ma,” O’Sheenana Daniels recalled. “When they heard her say that, they ran where…she was calling from.”
Family grapples with loss
O’Sheenana Daniels said she can’t believe her daughter died and is struggling with the circumstances around it.
“It’s sad to say, but I wish she hadn’t helped anyone,” O’Sheenana Daniels said. “I just wish she would have just kept on going about her business.”
Williams stated that she and Daniels had intended to begin paramedic school next week. Williams promised to assist both of them in achieving their aim.
New Orleans police say they are still investigating the crash. Daniels’ family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for her funeral.
