A woman was taken into custody Sunday morning after allegedly trying to punch an officer during a traffic stop, according to the Rockford Police Department.
Police said officers arrived at the intersection of South Main Street and Indiana Avenue about 2:17 a.m. for a reported motorist assistance.
Dispatch informed cops that two people in the vehicle were likely inebriated, with one reporting that the vehicle had run out of gas.
When cops arrived, they discovered the vehicle had struck a curb. While conversing with the driver, police said the passenger, Deoveonna Thomas, 27, began yelling at the driver to cease talking to officers.
According to investigators, Thomas exited the truck and proceeded to rant, saying, “She had the right to her own attorney.”
According to court filings, cops were initially able to quiet Thomas down, but a short time later, she resumed ranting and allegedly took a fighting stance, repeatedly saying, “Whatcha going to do?”
Officials claimed cops tried to arrest Thomas, who allegedly attempted to hit an officer during the incident. According to police, she swung over an officer’s head, but her arm made contact with the top of the officer’s head.
Thomas was booked into the Winnebago County Jail and charged with hindering the performance of an authorized peace officer and aggravated violence on a peace officer.
