Two Texas parents now face murder charges after officials determined their children died in an RV fire.
Matthew Chambers, 39, and Meaghan Herrod, 30, are each being held at the Liberty County Jail on two counts of murder. Local ABC affiliate KTRK reported that warrants were issued two months after the fire claimed the lives of a 2‑year‑old girl and her 3‑year‑old brother on a Cleveland, Texas, property.
Online jail records show the blaze occurred on Aug. 11. That day, 911 callers reported an RV that was “engulfed” in flames with occupants inside. Cleveland Fire Chief Sean Anderson told KTRK that firefighters entered the vehicle and searched for the victims even as the RV collapsed around them.
Fire officials confirmed the victims inside the RV were the two young siblings. The children’s grandfather verified their ages to KTRK.
Investigators said the burning RV was one of several similar units on a property shared by the family and friends. Anderson added that officials placed Chambers and Herrod “in the area of the fire at the time.” He declined to elaborate on the basis for the murder charges, noting the investigation remains ongoing.
Both Chambers and Herrod are held on $1 million bonds,$500,000 for each murder count. Their next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
