A Wisconsin driver is now on his way to prison after striking a hand‑holding couple crossing the street and abandoning them on a snowy road.
Christopher Wood, 34, received a four‑year prison term plus five years of probation after entering a no‑contest plea to a hit‑and‑run causing great bodily harm, court records show.
Around 8:44 p.m. on Dec. 2, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office rushed to a hit‑and‑run on Main Street in Merton, a village roughly 25 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Deputies discovered a 64‑year‑old man and woman lying in the roadway.
Paramedics quickly transported the victims to the hospital.
A criminal complaint obtained by the local Fox affiliate WITI and The Freeman of Waukesha County reported that the couple drifted in and out of consciousness when officers arrived, sustaining multiple broken bones and a brain bleed.
Surveillance footage captured the couple checking both directions before stepping onto the street hand‑in‑hand. While they stood in the middle of the road, the woman waved her arms “in an apparent attempt to get the attention of a vehicle coming towards them.”
A blue sedan struck both victims. According to the complaint, the driver briefly slowed before speeding away.
Video recorded the car fleeing the scene, and investigators later collected debris left behind.
The following day, a sheriff’s deputy noticed a vehicle parked about a mile away, its front end bearing damage that matched the debris recovered from the crash.
A woman stepped out as the deputy photographed the car, explaining she understood why it was there.
“It was my husband,” she reportedly said.
He left around 8 p.m. for a “go for a drive,” and when he came back, his wife spotted the damage. She gave him a ride to work the next morning. He later told her he wanted to “get it over with” and surrender, and police arrested him at their home.
Investigators also examined gas‑station footage that showed him purchasing three cans of Miller High Life, noting that he seemed to lose his balance inside the store.
No further update on the couple’s condition has been released.
