A 23‑year‑old Indiana man now faces murder charges for killing a 24‑year‑old he thought was dating his ex‑girlfriend. He allegedly fired a shot to the victim’s head while the man sat beside a witness, then “turned and walked away.”

Authorities quickly placed Jaymon Trey Gilreath into custody and charged him with one count of murder in the death of Noah Slinkard.

According to a Bloomington Police Department news release, officers arrived at a residence on the 1000 block of North Illinois Street around 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. First responders found Slinkard on an apartment’s front porch with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics rushed him to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m.

Multiple callers reported hearing gunfire and said the suspect was walking east on West 13th Street.

While officers were en route, Gilreath dialed 911 and informed dispatchers that he had just shot someone, an incident report obtained by Indiana Public Media shows. Police located him at 8:23 p.m. and took him into custody without incident.

Investigators also recovered a handgun along Gilreath’s path from the scene, which they believe was the weapon used in the shooting.

Slinkard had been sitting on the porch with another man when Gilreath allegedly approached on foot, according to police. That witness told officers, “he observed Gilreath pull a handgun from his waistline and then shoot the victim in the head before turning and walking away,” the release stated.

Investigators swiftly pinpointed a likely motive.

“Officers spoke with several witnesses and others present who advised officers that Gilreath believed that the victim was having a relationship with Gilreath’s ex‑girlfriend,” the police department’s news release said.

During a detective interview, Gilreath claimed he had a “gut feeling” that the mother of his child was cheating on him with Slinkard, Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR reported, citing court documents. He said he and the woman had planned to spend time together earlier that day, but she did not answer his calls or texts. He later saw her truck parked outside her mother’s house and spotted Slinkard on the porch.

Gilreath had driven past the residence with friends, got out, and told them he was going to confront Slinkard, warning, “If you hear a pop, go,” WTHR reported.

He later told police he could not recall the shooting itself. A detective noted that Gilreath remembered leaving the residence, noticing he was holding a gun, and suddenly realizing he had shot Slinkard.

Surveillance footage from the area, obtained by investigators, reportedly captures the shooting and Gilreath’s departure from the scene.

After his arrest, Gilreath was processed at the Monroe County Jail and held without bond as of Tuesday afternoon, according to records. He is slated for a bond‑review hearing on Oct. 27 and a pre‑trial conference on Nov. 18.
