A Tennessee man was detained for driving under the influence following a traffic check on The Villages’ Historic Side.
At around 2:47 p.m. Friday, Basil J. Boyer, 48, was pulled over in a white pickup truck near the intersection of Dustin Drive and Jason Drive in the Village of Silver Lake. A Lady Lake police officer started the traffic check after noticing a seat belt violation.
Boyer climbed out of the truck, wobbly and unstable on his feet. An officer observed the odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle and discovered a blue plastic cup in the center console with liquid and ice smelled of alcohol.
Boyer had glazed eyes, a thick tongue, slurred speech, and blood on his lips. He nearly stumbled when he approached the police cruiser’s side mirror to check his lips. He declined to do standardized field sobriety tests.
The native New Yorker was taken to the Leesburg Police Department, where he agreed to a breath test. However, he curled his lips over the mouthpiece, puffed his cheeks out, and held his breath instead of blowing, which officers interpreted as an intentional refusal to deliver an appropriate sample.
Boyer was detained on charges of driving under the influence and refusing to take a valid breath test. He was booked into the Lake County Jail and released after posting a $1,500 bond.
