California’s Pelosi Withholds Support For Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar Following Federal Raid

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined dozens of congressional Democrats who chose not to sign a party letter condemning the federal search of Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington home.

The letter, delivered earlier this week to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, was led by Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington and carried the support of 175 House Democrats. The signatories challenged a federal investigation into Omar’s immigration paperwork, asserting that the probe and the October 12 search of her home constituted political targeting ahead of the November election.

“We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her,” the lawmakers stated in the letter. “You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election.”

The members further argued that the matter under review did not justify “a pre-dawn raid on her home for paperwork her father filed when she was a minor.”

Federal authorities executed a court-authorized search warrant at Omar’s residence on October 12, seizing phones and notebooks as part of the inquiry. Investigators have reportedly examined the timing and filing of her family’s immigration records following their arrival in the United States from Somalia. Omar has not faced any criminal charges and has characterized the investigation as politically motivated.

Although senior Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, signed the letter, nearly 40 House Democrats declined to add their signatures. In addition to Pelosi, those who withheld their support included former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Representatives Josh Gottheimer, Henry Cuellar, and Jared Golden.

Pelosi’s office offered no public explanation for her decision not to sign the letter.
