On Friday evening, a package of suspected narcotics washed ashore on a beach in the Florida Keys, according to authorities.
Local residents discovered the bundle at approximately 5:45 p.m. near Mile Marker 76, as reported by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators described the package as roughly the size of a “brick,” a unit commonly equivalent to one kilogram.
Deputies secured the item at the scene and transferred it to the U.S. Border Patrol for further investigation and testing. No additional details regarding the package’s contents were immediately released.
The discovery of jettisoned narcotics along Florida Keys shorelines represents a recurring occurrence in the region. Due to the island chain’s close proximity to Caribbean shipping lanes and transit routes frequently used by maritime smugglers, narcotic packages regularly end up adrift in coastal currents.
In numerous past incidents, beachgoers, divers, and boaters have recovered bundles ranging from single bricks to multi-kilogram bales containing dozens of pounds of cocaine.
Smugglers frequently discard such cargo into open water to evade capture during law enforcement interdictions, or lose bundles during severe weather events, leaving them to drift onto area beaches. Federal and local agencies consistently instruct the public to refrain from handling these packages and to notify law enforcement immediately upon discovery.
