SOUTHEAST OHIO – May is observed as Asthma and Allergy Awareness month since 1984, when it was established by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). May is usuallypeak allergy season, making this recognition timely. For the 60 million Americans who experience either asthma or allergies, this month is important for education and awareness.
The following fast facts about asthma are from www.aafa.org:
- There is no cure for asthma, however, best way to maintain is to avoid triggers, take prescribed medication, and prepare for asthma attacks.
- Common asthma symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness.
- Up to 60 percent of adults and 80 percent of kids with asthma have allergies that can trigger an asthma attack.
- Food allergies affect 1 in 13 children in the United States.
- Annual cost of managing allergies is $18 billion.
- Penicillin is the most common allergy trigger for those with prescription drug allergies
