Indictments on Rees Returned in Alleged Racine Hit and Run

A man has been indicted following an alleged hit and run incident in Racine.

According to court documents, Jonathan S. Rees, 62, of Racine, has been indicted by the Meigs County Grand Jury on Oct. 2, 2024.

Rees has been indicted on a total of eight counts. They are two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault (both third degree felonies), two more counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault (both fourth degree felonies), one count of misdemeanor first degree OVI with three or more prior, two counts of Failure to Stop After Accident on Public Roads (one count a fourth degree felony and the other a fifth degree felony) and one count of Driving Under OVI Suspension (first degree misdemeanor).

Rees’ charges come from an incident on Aug. 26 of this year when he is alleged to have hit two construction workers, Brian Barringer and David Schackart.

Barringer and Scharkart were working on upgrades to sidewalks in the Village of Racine when the incident occurred. Barringer was transported from the scene by Meigs EMS to Holzer Meigs Emergency Department. Schackhart was flown to St. Mary’s in Huntington.

An indictment is one part of the legal process and is not a finding of guilt. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
