Meigs County Facing Extreme Cold Temperatures This Week
MEIGS COUNTY – Meigs County will be facing some extreme cold temperatures this week as a polar vortex brings a blast of bone chilling air to the region.
Meigs County is under a Winter Weather Advisory from Jan. 5 at 10 p.m. and expires Jan. 6 at 12 p.m. There is also a Wind Chill Warning starting on Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. and expires Jan. 7 at 3 p.m.
The weather will impact the Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic with snow, and markedly colder temperatures. The polar vortex which is a mid-upper level cyclonic feature that is normally over northern Canada will be making its presence known further south and dipping into the United States. The deep layer of cold air mass will mean “incredibly strong surge of bitterly cold Arctic Air along with gusty winds”, according to the National Weather Service.
While the Upper Midwest has already been affected Saturday night, Meigs County and the surrounding areas will experience what has been called “brutal conditions” Monday and continuing through Tuesday. The threat of extreme wind chills will be particularly dangerous with wind chill warnings being issued in multiple states including Ohio. The wind chills could make the air feel -20 to -50 degrees. The wind chill Afternoon highs on Monday for the area are expected to be below zero. In the extreme cold temperatures it is possible to get frost bite in as little as 15 minutes. More moderate temperatures are expected to return by Wednesday.
Snow is also in the forecast. Locally, the area may have an inch total of accumulation from Sunday night through Monday morning. The winter storm warnings are in effect as a result of the snow and the impending blast of deadly cold temperatures. Motorists are advised to be aware of changing conditions and watch out for black ice.
