A Chicago man has been apprehended nearly two years after allegedly driving away from a crash that killed an 81-year-old bicyclist.
According to Chicago police, Edgar Carrera, 37, was arrested Thursday in the 4900 block of South Lorel Avenue in southwest suburban Stickney.
Carrera was charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death.
According to investigators, on October 15, 2023, Carrera was driving in the 5600 block of South Rutherford Avenue when he collided with an 81-year-old man pedaling a bicycle. The bicyclist died, and police say Carrera fled without reporting the accident or assisting the victim.
The bicyclist’s identity is presently unknown, and how detectives tied Carrera to the incident is unclear.
Carrera’s detention hearing was planned for Friday in the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
