A 13-year-old boy detained in connection with the shooting death of an 11-year-old will be held in secure detention.
Last week, Milwaukee police officers responded to a report near 68th and Silver Spring. Deon Sargent, 11, was killed during a robbery, according to police. A 13-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident. CBS 58 does not name him since he is a minor.
Prosecutors say the 13-year-old told officers he wasn’t thinking and that he thought it wouldn’t be difficult to steal the rifle from Sergeant. The court commissioner noted that she was concerned about the 13-year-old’s and other community members’ safety and that he would remain in secure detention.
The court commissioner stated that in this case, one small child possessed a firearm, and the other child took advantage of it. The commissioner remarked that this occurrence demonstrates the inherent risk of weapons in the hands of children.
In court, Sargent’s mother testified that she had no idea how Sargent obtained the rifle.
The plea hearing is scheduled for next month.
