A Norfolk man was sentenced Tuesday to serve 30 years in jail for three counts of raping an 11-year-old girl.
On Tuesday, Virginia Beach Circuit Court sentenced Ricardo Leonel Mejia, 35, who formerly lived on the 7000 block of Mamie Boulevard in Norfolk. He pleaded guilty on June 17.
According to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the evidence showed that on October 9, 2024, the 11-year-old victim’s mother went to check on her child before retiring to bed and discovered the door was closed. She grabbed a butter knife to open the latch and discovered Mejia naked in her daughter’s bed.
She yelled for her spouse. Mejia got out of bed, grabbed his clothing, and leaped out an open window. The wife recognized him as the man hired by the family to refurbish one of their bathrooms.
Mejia admits to raping the girl three times while knowing she was underage. The first incident happened in the bathroom when the victim’s parents were away, and two occurred in her bedroom at night.
