A man was in custody in Los Angeles County after being detained for assaulting a young girl in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to NBC Los Angeles Wednesday.
Deputies responded to the neighborhood of Hayvenhurst Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard around 5 p.m. on Tuesday to begin the investigation.
Two girls, including a minor under the age of 14, informed authorities that a man they didn’t know attacked one of them.
The sheriff’s department apprehended Elmer Mercado, 42, and charged him with irritating and molesting a minor, as well as lewd/lascivious conduct with a child under 14.
According to law enforcement officials, Mercado, who has previously been arrested for sexual behavior, inappropriately touched one of the girls.
Sources claim that Mercado’s previous arrests were only for minor offenses.
The suspect was being jailed on $100,000 bail as of Wednesday morning.
