A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to prison after threatening his girlfriend with a gun and violently beating her, authorities reported Wednesday.

Troy Aguilar-Olmos attacked his girlfriend in March after threatening to shoot and kill her if she did not speak with him, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

However, as she approached him, Aguilar-Olmos, then 15, strangled her.

He also punched her many times and pointed a gun at her back, according to authorities. He was eventually arrested at his parents’ home.

What charges did 16-year-old face in domestic violence case?

He pleaded guilty to two counts of severe assault, both of which were deemed domestic violence crimes.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated that this case exemplifies how domestic abuse affects people of all ages.

“What happened to this young woman is heartbreaking. No relationship should ever be marked by fear or violence, no matter the age of the offender,” Mitchell said in the announcement. “Today’s outcome cannot undo the trauma she endured, but it is a step toward justice.”

Her agency recently announced sentencing in a number of domestic abuse cases.

On Monday, she emphasized her office’s commitment to domestic abuse survivors while announcing the sentencing of a man who violently assaulted his pregnant ex-wife in Surprise. According to Mitchell, the October 2024 incident demonstrated how far domestic abusers will go to scare their victims.
