Ruby Atkins obit pictureRuby T. Atkins, age 90, of Gallipolis and formerly of St. Albans, died April 20, 2015 at the Holzer Assisted Living facility in Gallipolis.

Ruby was born in Maybeury, McDowell County, WV. on February 5, 1925 to the late Pose W. Thomas and Dorcas Moses Thomas. Her father was a coal miner and the family moved frequently during her school years. Even though she changed schools numerous times, she graduated from Kingston High School as valedictorian of her class and received a full scholarship to college.

Ruby married Cecil Atkins on August 1, 1946, and began a very successful career as a full time homemaker. She became a mother of two children and devoted her life to nurturing and caring for them. She was a wonderful cook, loved to sew and knit, and enjoyed reading. She and Cecil traveled a great deal after he retired. She adored her grandchildren and fostered in them a love of reading and history, frequently traveling to historic sites with them. She loved to take her grandchildren shopping. She was always very supportive of her children and grandchildren and was always there for every birthday and life event. She became a great grandmother of three, with whom she enjoyed phone chats and visits. Ruby had a lifelong love for dogs, which brought her great enjoyment in her final years.

Ruby had a strong faith and love of God. She was a great example of a Godly wife and mother. She was a member of St Peters United Methodist Church and later attended Abney St Church of God and Bible Center Church.

Ruby was predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, her son, Dale M Atkins in 1990, and her husband, Cecil on March 29, 2015. She is survived by her daughter, Karen A Wheeler of Pt Pleasant; daughter-in-law, Vivian Atkins of Anderson, IN; grandson, Chris Atkins and wife, Shallen of McCordsville, IN; granddaughters, Katherine M Phillips of Columbus, Ohio and Kalena K Wheeler of Pt Pleasant, WV; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Logan, and Calvin Atkins of McCordsville, IN; several cousins, and her beloved grand dogs, Mendi, Lucky, Bach, and Largo.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Saturday April 25, 2015 in the Upper Mausoleum Chapel at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans. Friends may call at the chapel on Saturday from 1:00 PM. until the time of service.
