Syracuse gas station burglar sentenced to prison

Symbol of law and justice in the empty courtroom, law and justice concept.

POMEROY, Ohio – Meigs County Prosecuting Attorney James K. Stanley announces that on April 12, 2017, defendant Derek Nichols, 27, of Pomeroy, entered a guilty plea to one count of robbery and one count of burglary, both second degree felonies. Meigs County Court of Common Pleas Judge I. Carson Crow sentenced the defendant to a five-year prison term for each count, with the sentences running consecutive to each other, for a total sentence of ten years in prison. In addition to the prison sentence, the defendant must pay restitution to the victims. Prior to the change of plea and sentencing hearing, the Meigs County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office consulted with the victims in each case, and each victim agreed with the resolution.

On January 27, 2017, the defendant robbed the TNT Pit Stop gas station in Syracuse while brandishing a knife. During the investigation of the robbery, the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office determined that the defendant had committed the burglary offense on December 30, 2016 by breaking into a Racine-area home and stealing several items. The Defendant was indicted for both counts on February 15, 2017.

Stanley thanks the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office for their extensive investigation in each of these cases as well as for their quick apprehension of the defendant following the robbery. Stanley also thanks the Pomeroy Police Department, the West Virginia State Police, and the Sheriff’s Office of Roane County, West Virginia for their assistance with the robbery case. Without the cooperation of multiple agencies, these cases would not have been resolved as timely as they have been and the victims in these cases would not have received justice so quickly. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Adkins handled this matter for the State of Ohio, and the Meigs County Victim’s Assistance Program advocated on behalf of the victims throughout the judicial process.
