An Illinois man is facing charges in Florida after reportedly robbing a bank in Tallahassee on Wednesday, causing a local school to briefly close before heading west across the Panhandle.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies responded to an alert at Centennial Bank on the 6500 block of Thomasville Road at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. They arrived and confirmed that a man claimed to have a gun and demanded money but did not obtain it before fleeing.

Nobody was wounded in the incident. During the incident, nearby Chiles High School was temporarily closed until authorities determined it was safe to reopen.

Detectives from the LCSO Violent Crimes Unit and forensic crime scene specialists took over the investigation, determining that the suspect was headed west to Bay County. Detectives visited Panama City to arrange a combined investigation with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
