Stimulus Checks Update Families of Four Could Get $2,400 Under New Plan

A new proposal aims to revive stimulus checks to give Americans more financial relief.

U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, introduced the American Worker Rebate Act in July. The plan would send rebate checks funded by revenue generated from President Trump’s tariff policies.

“Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods. Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country,” Hawley said in a statement.

Like the stimulus payments during the COVID pandemic, these checks would help families with income-based limits. Under Hawley’s plan, each eligible adult and their dependent child would receive at least $600, meaning a family of four could get as much as $2,400.

Income limitations would apply to the payments, with amounts decreasing for families with an income of $150,000 or more, $112,500 for heads of households or $75,000 for individual taxpayers. Hawley said larger credits could be issued in the future if tariff revenue surpasses current estimates.

The U.S. is now collecting near-record monthly tariff revenue, totaling about $30 billion each month. According to some projections, Hawley noted, the U.S. could generate more than $150 billion in tariff revenue this year alone.

The idea of stimulus payments is not new.

Trump suggested he might support rebates for U.S. taxpayers funded by tariffs on imports. While he has not backed a specific amount, earlier proposals tied to government cuts floated stimulus checks of up to $5,000 per household.

During the COVID pandemic, Americans received three rounds of stimulus checks. The first, issued in April 2020, provided up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 per qualifying child. The second, in December 2020, offered up to $600 per person, and the third, in March 2021, delivered up to $1,400 per individual.
