On the afternoon of October 10, Phoenix exploded into chaos as a man opened fire while driving recklessly through the downtown streets. The incident generated a quick response from local law enforcement, which resulted in the arrest of the culprit. The Phoenix Police Department issued a Critical Incident Briefing outlining the frightening chase and its conclusion.
The incident began around 4th Avenue and Osborn Road when a two-officer patrol unit heard gunfire near them. A witness identified the source of the sound as an alley next to an apartment complex. While investigating, the officers came upon a man with a rifle on top of his car roof, who ignored their demands and retrieved the weapon, got into his vehicle, and fled, shooting as he went. The chase wound through Phoenix’s neighborhoods, and no one was hurt by the suspect’s apparent random firing.
The hunt intensified as cops from the Tactical Support Bureau seized command, attempting to control the perilous situation unfolding across Phoenix. The pursuit ended around 16th and Portland Streets, where authorities employed a tactical technique to halt the automobile. “During the stop, one officer observed the man reaching for the weapon in his car; the officer fired his duty gun striking the man,” according to the press release.
After immobilizing the suspect’s vehicle, the officers moved forward with the assistance of a K9. The cops pulled the gunman from his automobile and gave medical care until the fire crew arrived. Despite the violent outburst, which included being shot by police, the man survived and was admitted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect’s rifle and a handgun were recovered from inside the vehicle when he was being apprehended.
The officer who discharged their firearm had been in the Phoenix Police Department’s K-9 Unit for more than eight years. The event is currently being investigated by numerous agencies, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Phoenix Police Department. No decisions on whether the measures taken are consistent with department policy or legal legislation will be made until these investigations are completed.
