A Maryland mother faces life in prison after being convicted in court Friday of shooting and seriously injuring her teenage daughter at their Seat Pleasant home last year.
According to the Prince George’s County Office of the State’s Attorney, Talecka Brown, 33, was found guilty by a jury of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the shooting of her then-13-year-old daughter on September 23, 2024.
Prosecutors claimed the shooting resulted from an altercation between Brown and her daughter, during which Brown shot the girl in the back of the neck.
Officers from the Seat Pleasant Police Department rushed to the 500 block of 69th Place shortly before 5 p.m. that day after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered the girl with an upper-body gunshot wound.
The teenage girl was initially in critical condition and was admitted to the hospital. Brown was first charged with attempted first-degree murder, but he faced more counts later.
“It is unimaginable that a mother would turn on her own child in such a violent way,” says State’s Attorney Tara Jackson. “A mother has a duty to love, protect, and nurture her child, not cause them harm. Our hearts are with this young survivor, who endured a level of pain and fear no child should ever experience. We want to thank our prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their diligent work in ensuring accountability in this case, as well as the jury for their service.”
Brown is scheduled to return to court on February 19, 2026, for her sentence.
