The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana is warning of dangerous travel conditions as strong winds and lake effect snow hit the region today and Thursday morning.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for the whole region, with gusts reaching 50 mph, while a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for counties along Lake Michigan, including Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph (MI), where 3-6 inches of snow are forecast by early Thursday.

Cold air surging in behind a passing front will push temperatures into the 30s today, with wind chills plummeting into the teens by nightfall. Snowfall will increase late this afternoon and evening, resulting in blowing and drifting snow that will restrict visibility to near zero at times.

Forecast Highlights:

  • Today: Very windy with west to southwest gusts up to 50 mph; snow showers developing by afternoon.
  • Tonight–Thursday: Lake effect snow continues, especially across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
  • Friday: Chance of lingering morning snow; frigid start with wind chills in the teens.

Impacts:

  • Blowing and drifting snow will make roads slick and difficult to navigate.
  • Strong winds may cause isolated power outages and hazardous travel, particularly along north-south highways.
  • Temperatures will remain well below freezing, leading to refreezing of wet surfaces.
