A wintry mix is expected to return to southwest Virginia Monday night and Tuesday, with freezing rain posing the biggest risk to cars and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, ice will be the primary worry, especially in regions along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where larger ice accumulations are possible. Forecasters warn that hazardous travel conditions may develop overnight Monday and last through the Tuesday morning commute.

The most recent forecast map shows considerable ice potential in central and southern counties, where temperatures are likely to remain near freezing as precipitation moves in. Even a little icing can render untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks dangerous, especially at higher elevations.

Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling late Monday or early Tuesday and to check updated forecasts as circumstances change. The Weather Service recommends planning for icy roadways and power outages in the most affected areas.
