A Houston man was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for fatally shooting a local attorney at a McDonald’s after a dispute over a double Filet-O-Fish order. Anthony Landry, 59, was found guilty by a jury that deliberated for just 20 minutes; sentencing took only an hour and a half as they processed emotional testimonies from friends and family of the victim, Jeffrey Limmer, reported The Houston Chronicle.
In May 2024, an incident at a fast food chain along Katy Freeway turned deadly when Limmer intervened to calm Landry, who was furiously protesting about his order. According to KHOU, Landry exited the restaurant, retrieved a gun from his vehicle, and shot Limmer several times. The defense claimed self-defense, but prosecutors declared the act intentional, which the jury clearly agreed with.
Limmer’s dedication to his family and community was underscored during the trial, with testimony concerning his role as a primary bone marrow donor for his brother Brent, who was battling blood cancer, as well as allusions to an undisturbed workplace packed with reminders of a life cruelly cut short. A park near McDonald’s has been renamed in Limmer’s honor, and his rescue dog, Lola, now lives with a friend, according to The Houston Chronicle.
Despite his defense attorney, Kenneth Cager, arguing for a reduced sentence based on Landry’s nonviolent nature, Landry’s criminal record includes a prior felony conviction. “You don’t have any evidence before you that there is any explanation for this behavior,” prosecutor Tiffany Dupree told The Houston Chronicle. The jury debated whether to impose a 99-year sentence or life in prison before deciding on the latter. Landry will be available for release after 30 years, at the age of 89.
The case highlights the catastrophic escalation that may result from normal daily contacts, leaving one guy dead and another’s life irreversibly changed. Limmer, who was known as a kind and committed person, became yet another victim of needless violence over something as insignificant as an errant fast-food order.
