A 55-year-old man was taken into custody on Monday, December 15, after a dog was discovered dead outside a home in Canutillo, and more animals were discovered in terrible condition, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO).

On Monday, deputies aided the El Paso County Animal Welfare Unit in an animal abuse investigation at a property in the 400 block of Elk Way in Canutillo.

Deputies arrived to find a deceased dog outside the home, as well as several animals in terrible condition. According to EPCSO, Juan Gutierrez, 55, was arrested after the investigation for cruelty to non-livestock animals.

Further inquiry resulted in additional charges. Gutierrez was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on four counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and posted a $15,000 bond.
