Three people are facing charges after authorities say they tried to smuggle drugs into the Allegheny County Jail, according to the Allegheny County Police.
County police said detectives began getting information last month that two detained people were planning to bring synthetic marijuana, often known as K2, into the jail. Investigators later identified the inmates as Tyrease Platt, 31, and Chaz Coles, 39.
According to police, on Feb. 2, detectives reviewed jail records and discovered that Platt and Coles were allegedly conspiring with a third individual to have the drugs hidden in a bathroom at a local magistrate’s office. The plan was apparently set for February 3, when Coles was slated to appear for a preliminary hearing.
Detectives arrived at the magistrate’s office about 9:30 a.m. on February 3 and witnessed Tyrique Craighead, 33, enter the washroom. After Craighead left, detectives investigated the bathroom and discovered an open bag of Doritos with many rolled pieces of paper. Police stated that the contents tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids.
Craighead was brought to the scene for arrest. Platt, Coles, and Craighead are all charged with several offenses, including criminal conspiracy, contraband, and criminal use of a communication facility.
