Former Franklin County Jail Deputy Sentenced To Prison After Allowing Assault Of Inmate

A former deputy sheriff from Franklin County was sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to violating an inmate’s civil rights.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio, Matthew Carey, a former deputy, was sentenced to nearly four years (46 months) in prison for depriving an inmate of his civil rights.

According to court documents, Carey purposefully revealed a pretrial detainee’s pending charge of rape of a minor to another pretrial detainee, Gmier McCall. Carey reportedly acted with the knowledge that disclosing the charge would heighten the risk of the detainee facing abuse from other jail inmates.

McCall allegedly took Carey’s statements as a signal to attack the inmate, resulting in an assault that Carey did not attempt to prevent. According to court papers, the victim suffered major bodily injuries such as a neck fracture, lip lacerations, contusions, and a concussion.

Carey was originally charged with conspiracy, namely depriving the detainee of the right to be free from unreasonable force and the indifference of a deputy to a risk of physical damage. He was additionally charged with two counts of violating the victim’s constitutional rights and pleaded guilty to the final charge in June 2025.

In November 2024, McCall pled guilty to a similar offense and was sentenced to one year in jail.
