2 injured after early-morning fire destroys Sussex County home

Fire burned a home on Hill Road in Stanhope Borough early Sunday morning, as firefighters faced high winds and extremely low conditions, according to officials.

Stanhope Hose Company No. 1 was dispatched at 3:58 a.m. on Sunday to a confirmed structure fire on Hill Road. Crews arrived to find the home completely engulfed in flames. Due to the size of the fire and the conditions on the scene, a second and then a third box alarm were sent to request extra mutual aid.

Firefighters fought the blaze despite high gusts and temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees. The fire was eventually brought under control, but the house could not be saved.

While no emergency personnel were harmed, two inhabitants who were inside the house when the fire began were taken to the hospital. One patient was evacuated to Love Lane using basic life support, then transferred to Atlantic Air Ambulance and flown to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for specialty care. The second patient was also transferred to Saint Barnabas via ambulance, accompanied by Saint Clare’s paramedics.

Several agencies helped with the response, including the Stanhope Police Department, Netcong Police Department, Netcong Fire Department, Byram Fire Department, Hopatcong Fire Department, Budd Lake Fire Department, Flanders Fire Department, Roxbury Fire Department, Lakeland Emergency Squad, Hopatcong Ambulance Corps, Mount Olive Atlantic Ambulance, Sparta Dispatch, and the Morris County Ambulance Bus.

The Sussex County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Sussex County Fire Coordinator, Stanhope’s Office of Emergency Management Coordinator, the Sussex County Canteen Unit, the Stanhope Department of Public Works, and Jersey Central Power & Light all offered additional assistance.

Fire officials credited the extensive mutual assistance reaction for assisting in the management of the incident under harsh conditions. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
