Miami County parent taken into custody for submitting fake doctor’s notes to school

A Miami County school police department reports that a parent was arrested for providing fraudulent doctor’s notes to her child’s school, the Maconaquah School Corp. The Police Department issued a news release on Tuesday.

Ashley Shupperd of Bunker Hill received an arrest warrant on February 2 and was detained on February 4. According to the statement, she was being held in the Miami County Jail on a $13,000 bond. Because the jail does not publicly release its inmate list, it was unclear whether Shupperd was still in custody.

According to online documents from Miami Superior Court 2, she is facing preliminary low-level felony allegations of counterfeiting and fraud with augmenting circumstances. She is also facing a misdemeanor court charge of fraud. Her initial hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in Miami Superior Court 2 in Peru.

In early January, the school police department discovered that a parent had manipulated many doctor’s papers to provide a pupil special privileges and turn unexplained absences into excused ones.

According to investigators, the doctor whose name appeared on the notes agreed they were fraudulent.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the school district police department at 765-689-9131, Ext. 5060.
