Pennsylvania Snowbird Detained At Mardi Gras In The Villages

A Pennsylvania snowbird was detained for celebrating Mardi Gras in The Villages.

Troy Lynn Long, 62, was driving a white Yamaha golf cart at Lake Sumter Landing at 6 p.m. Friday when he was pulled over for blue lights on both sides of the golf cart’s bottom exterior, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy approached the golf cart and discovered an open 12-ounce Miller Lite beer can in an orange football koozie in the cup holder. Using his Pennsylvania driver’s license as identification, Long admitted to drinking during the Mardi Gras festivities in the square. Three more beers were discovered in a cooler inside the golf cart.

Long, who bought a home in the La Paloma Villas near the Tierra Del Sol Recreation Center in June, volunteered to do field sobriety tests, but his poor performance led officers to believe he was driving drunk. However, he submitted breath samples with it. 0.00 blood alcohol concentration. He gave a urine sample, which was tested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Long was arrested for driving under the influence and lodged at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after paying a $1,000 bond.
