A woman is facing many charges after township police claim she was caught shoplifting at a local Target store and was discovered to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine while also providing cops with a false identification.
According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department, officers were summoned to Target about 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 to investigate a retail theft in progress. Loss prevention officers told police they detained a lady who was reportedly concealing products in her luggage and passing all points of sale without paying.
Officers came and found the suspect, Kaylee Elizabeth Appleton, with store products in her bag. According to police, she initially refused to cooperate with store security but eventually complied after cops approached her.
Investigators said that after being caught, Appleton gave a bogus identity and date of birth that belonged to her sister. While recovering the unpaid merchandise, officers examined her luggage and discovered a small baggie containing a material she allegedly characterized as baking soda but claimed did not belong to her. The material later tested positive for methamphetamine, according to authorities.
Authorities said that after being handcuffed, Appleton revealed her true identity. A records check revealed that she had an active arrest warrant out of Columbia County for a previous retail theft case.
Appleton was transferred to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. She is expected to face accusations such as retail theft, offering fake identification to law enforcement, possession of a prohibited narcotic, and outstanding warrants.
