A senior at a high school near Pittsburgh is facing over 300 felony charges after being accused of running a “large-scale” sextortion ring that targeted dozens of minors.
Zachariah Meyers, 18, is accused of convincing juvenile teenagers to upload inappropriate images and videos on social media.
Investigators interviewed 30 teenage boys and found at least 21 victims, aged 14 to 17 years old.
Erie News Now recently interviewed Erie FBI Special Agent Ryan Chrobak on the topic of sextortion.
It’s a massive concern. ” stated Chrobak. “We’re probably only seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this type of reporting, because many people are too ashamed or too embarrassed to report it.”
Although this case occurred 140 miles south of Erie, it has become an increasing concern in Erie County.
“Technology is obviously a big part of this problem, and in recent years, the introduction of artificial intelligence, how quickly that feature, that function is progressing,” said Chrobak. “We’re seeing that incorporated, specifically in some of our crimes against children cases.”
To avoid becoming a victim, law enforcement authorities recommend that you be cautious about what you disclose online and who you communicate with.

If you are targeted, Chrobak recommends calling the police. Please report it to your local police,” Chrobak stated. “Report it to the FBI, and again, take measures to safeguard yourself when you are utilizing those devices.”
