An owner of a well-known Columbia-area restaurant has been apprehended and charged with tax evasion, according to the state’s lead revenue agency.
Tyrone Cyrus, 50, the owner of Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles, was charged with four counts of tax evasion, the South Carolina Department of Revenue reported on Thursday.
According to the agency, Cyrus reported approximately $8.2 million in taxable sales between 2018 and 2021. However, investigators claim that actual sales totaled roughly $11.2 million during that period. With over $3 million in unreported revenue, detectives found that Cyrus dodged around $232,000 in South Carolina sales tax.
If convicted, Cyrus faces up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine per offense. He would also be responsible for the costs of prosecution. According to authorities, he is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
