A Philippi man was arrested after being accused of violently grabbing a small dog and shaking it repeatedly.
Doyle Summerfield, 29, has been charged with animal cruelty, according to the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say Summerfield’s mother, the dog’s owner, informed them he grabbed and aggressively shook the dog. According to court documents, she stated that this was the fourth time he had done it and that she intended to file charges.
Summerfield told deputies that “all I did was grab the collar and shake it.” Court filings state that he told detectives he did it because he couldn’t sleep.
Summerfield is currently in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail with a bond set at $8,000.
