A 54-year-old man from Fayetteville, New York, is in custody after a multi-agency investigation into a job-related theft that cost a Key Largo homeowner thousands of dollars. Russell Martin Madajewski was detained on Sunday and charged with theft and using a two-way communication device to conduct a felony.
The case began in March 2024, when the victim applied online for a position at Generac.
During the hiring process, the victim was asked to supply personal information and told that he needed to buy pricey equipment to begin his employment.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was duped into wiring money to other people, including Madajewski. The victim had lost $11,137 by the time the plan was revealed.
Detectives from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with law enforcement officers in New York to follow the cash trail and identify individuals responsible.
Following the inquiry, investigators acquired warrants to arrest Madajewski. He was then brought into arrest and placed into jail.
