A woman was arrested after law enforcement officers surrounded a Downtown Pittsburgh parking garage with firearms drawn on Wednesday afternoon.
The tense situation began when law officers attempted to locate a woman wanted on federal firearm charges, according to authorities. According to KDKA, the woman was a passenger in a vehicle that Pittsburgh Bureau of Police officers attempted to stop at 4 p.m. According to sources, the motorist then turned into the garage at Stanwix Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard.
A representative for Pittsburgh Public Safety said in a statement that the lady fled and placed a gun beneath a car in the garage. Another Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson said in a statement that the police presence was the result of a joint operation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the bureau’s Pittsburgh Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit and that the woman was apprehended after exiting the vehicle and fleeing.
A security worker at the garage told KDKA that the woman was discovered in the basement and the driver on the second story.
It wasn’t immediately apparent if the woman or the driver will be charged. The motorist was brought to police headquarters for interrogation. No additional information was revealed on Wednesday.
Video from the incident showed a strong police presence, with officers surrounding the building and occasionally drawing their rifles. The garage was closed as police investigated, and the adjoining Gateway Center office building was placed on lockdown. Witnesses described the situation as “chaos.”One witness told KDKA, “We just kept getting pushed away because they said it was too dangerous and they didn’t want us caught in the crossfire.”
