Drug dealer taken into custody for murder after man dies of cocaine overdose, EBRSO says

An alleged drug dealer was taken into custody for murder after a Baton Rouge man died of a cocaine overdose.

According to arrest documents from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, a man died on November 25, 2025, in his “man cave” at his property on Watts Road. Investigators discovered cocaine and a straw with cocaine residue in the room, and an autopsy determined that he died as a result of a cocaine overdose.

The man’s family discovered a text exchange on his phone with a person named “Donny” where they discussed purchasing drugs, according to records. The man asked Donny whether he thought he could obtain around $80 tomorrow night. That is the good stuff. Yes, I can. My connection to that is strong. What time? 6, 7, or 8? Donny said, “I got an 80 a few weeks ago.”

Additional communications show the two organizing a time and place to meet.

Deputies believe they have identified “Donny” as 60-year-old Don Ludwick Truly.

On March 24, deputies detained Truly at his workplace and took him into custody for questioning. Truly admitted to selling the man $80 worth of cocaine, according to an arrest affidavit.

Truly was put into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on accusations of second-degree murder and possession/distribution of a Schedule II controlled dangerous drug.
