Three members of the Hunt family, from Arlington, were sentenced to prison for their roles in a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme, according to the Department of Justice.
The family members were charged with organizing a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns under the names of alleged trusts they controlled. According to the announcement, the plan sought more than $8.5 million in tax refunds to which they were not entitled.
The scheme was able to obtain approximately $1.7 million in false proceeds from the IRS. The family members spent the money on luxury items such as furnishings, bitcoin, luxury vehicles, and a home in Mississippi.
Baylon Hunt is claimed to have submitted other fraudulent documents to the IRS, such as bogus financial instruments and changed money orders. He and another unnamed family member were warned not to submit fake paperwork, but they continued to do so.
David Hunt was sentenced to 92 months in jail, his son Baylon Hunt to 38 months, and Baylon’s half-brother, Corey Burt, to 94 months. A fourth anonymous family member, who was also convicted, is scheduled to be sentenced in May.
Three Hunt family members were also found guilty on various charges of aiding and helping in the preparation of fake tax returns. Baylon was acquitted on two of the aiding and helping counts.
The offenders were also ordered to repay nearly $1.7 million in restitution to the United States.
